Sclerotherapy
Is a medical procedure commonly used for treating varicose veins and spider veins. It involves the injection of a special detergent solution, directly into the vein or capillaries. This solution irritates the lining of the blood vessel, causing it to collapse and stick together. Over time, the vessel turns into scar tissue that fades from view, thereby reducing the appearance of the vein.
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment and is often preferred for its effectiveness and relatively quick recovery time. The procedure typically takes about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the number and size of veins or capillaries being treated. Local anesthesia is usually not required, as the procedure involves minimal discomfort. After the treatment, patients are often advised to wear compression stockings to help with healing and to reduce swelling. Most people can return to their normal activities on the same day, although it’s usually recommended to avoid strenuous exercise for a couple of weeks. The results of sclerotherapy can take a few weeks to several months to appear fully. In some cases, multiple treatments may be necessary to achieve the desired outcome. While it is an effective procedure, it does not prevent new veins or capillaries from appearing and might require periodic maintenance treatments.
